Review Day Tuesday: Batte of the Drugstore Mascara!

6 Drugstore Brands, 6 Best-Selling Mascaras...
Which one will come out on top?!

Guys, I have a confession to make and it is this: My name is Jordan, and I am a mascara addict. "But Jordan, you're a MAKEUP addict. Mascara falls under that umbrella."  True.  But mascara is truly my vice.  It's all I wore, aside from the occasional pop of brightly-colored shadow and/or liquid liner in high school, which is where the addiction began.  I have a soft spot for mascara. However, the upside to this pesky dilemma is that I am also very particular about mascara. If my eyelashes aren't nearly touching my eyebrows, black as night, with every individual lash standing tall at attention, it's not worth my hard-earned money. CAN I GET AN AMEN?!  But with SO MANY options to choose from, especially at the drugstore, it really boils down to one question, "which one really works?"

LOOK NO FURTHER FRIENDS! Today, I will provide you with a definitive answer.

I surveyed friends and family about what they look for in a mascara to come up with the criteria for this test (you know, to eliminate my own personal bias and what not - just like in BOTDS, which you can read HERE) and they all agreed on the following:
1. Color - Is the mascara jet black and opaque?
2. Length- Do my lashes look significantly longer?
3. Volume - Are my lashes FULL, separated, and evenly coated, not clumped together or patchy?
4. Longevity - Does it last all day without flaking or smearing?

I purchased SIX best-selling mascaras from multiple popular drugstore brands and I've listed the details of my picks below:

Rimmel Lash Accelerator - Cost is $9.99 for 0.23oz.  Originally suggested to me by the glorious queen of makeup, Jaclyn Hill, as the best bottom lash mascara to compliment any set of false lashes and she was definitely right.
PROS: It is dark as night; my bottom lashes are long, lean, and clump-free.  It also lasts all day without flaking and smearing all over my cheeks.
CONS: However, I don't know about you but I like mascara that works well for both my bottom AND my top lashes. It does NOT work well on top lashes; the wand tends to make them stick together, instead of fanning them out for maximum volume.

Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black - Cost is $7.99 for 0.23oz.
PROS: This is THE blackest mascara on the market. One of my favorite mascaras to coat my top lashes with before applying false lashes- especially if you use concealer on your lids as primer and then set with powder. Darkens those babies right up so they blend flawlessly!
CONS: However, there is the occasional flake, it is not super flattering on lower lashes, and I am not impressed with its lengthening abilities.

Covergirl The Super Sizer - Cost is $6.99 for 0.4oz.
PROS: If you haven't read my Holy Grail post, then you need to.  I am obsessed with this mascara - solid yes on all criteria. Especially with it being the cheapest price for the most amount of product.
CONS: ... Can't think of a single one.

Physician's Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Mascara - Cost is $9.99 for 0.26.
PROS: Gives a decent amount of volume, as promised by its' title. I feel that this would make a great bottom lash mascara.
CONS: I was not impressed with its' lack of length.  Maybe I got a bad one, but mine was dry and a bit crumbly right out of the gate. Not promising. Also, it was not as dark as the other top contenders either.  "Organic" is wonderful but considering it compromised the overall quality of mascara, this would be an overall pass for me.

Wet n Wild Lash Renegade - Cost is $5.49 for 0.27oz.
PROS: Another torture-device looking wand, but equally as magical as the Supersizer. The ball on the end allows you to get into the utmost corners of your eyes to make sure every last lash is coated and lengthened. It is very black, lasts all day, and does an awesome job making your lashes look FULL!
CONS: Sometimes difficulty to find in drugstores and it is not as lengthening as I personally desire.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Big Shot - Cost is $8.49 for 0.33oz.
PROS: The packaging is SO sleek and high quality! It feels luxurious. Me likey. Also, the volume and length this mascara gives is INSANE! I was honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed this mascara.  I have heard a lot of hype surrouding this product because Maybelline recruited a lot of well-known, high-profile Youtubers to promote it, so I was skeptical. But it surpassed my expectations.
CONS: I wish the wand/formula was a little more wet. I like when I can apply two coats and my lashes look a little thicker (not clumpy) and almost glossy.  This did not do that for me.

and the winner is ...
Covergirl's The Super Sizer! 😍

Call me biased, because it is my holy grail, end-all-be-all mascara, but not a single other mascara was able to get an A+ on every single criteria, like this one.  It. Is. So. Good. I cannot stress it enough.  RUN TO YOUR NEAREST DRUGSTORE AND BUY IT!  And if you're feeling like splurging, Maybelline's The Colossal Big Shot mascara was a very close runner-up and definitely worth the buy.

Disclaimer: While I considered all major drugstore brands when making this post, I didn't include Neutrogena, Revlon, or Almay mascaras because their selection is limited and I frankly didn't love any of them.

    1. I'm so glad you like them! Tell me how you feel about the mascara. If you want extra OOMPH, apply a lash primer first (like Loreal - it is white but don't be intimidated)!
