Review Day Tuesday: Battle of the Dry Shampoo

If you're anything like me, the quote "by Friday, my hair is 90% dry shampoo" rings SO TRUE! With a wide variety of options available, ranging in price from dollar store to BMW, it really boils down to one question, "which one really works?"

LOOK NO FURTHER FRIENDS! Today, I will provide you with a definitive answer.

I surveyed friends and family about what they look for in a dry shampoo to come up with the criteria for this test (you know, to eliminate my own personal bias and what not - very scientific) and they all agreed on the following:
1. Effectiveness - Does my hair actually look clean?
2. Appearance - Does it leave residue or a white cast on my hair?
3. Affordability - How much does it cost?
4. Scent - Does it smell nice (or at least not like I dunked my head in a vat of baby powder)?

I purchased FIVE different dry shampoos from various popular brands, with the entire spectrum of prices in mind and I've listed the details of my dry shampoo picks below:

Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Original Dry Shampoo  - cost is 5.99 for 7.0 oz
PROS: makes hair look day-after-clean, slight residue, less than $10
CONS: leaves a slight white residue, smells like aerosol

Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoo Original Fresh -  cost is $5.49 for 4.9oz
PROS: makes hair look just washed clean, no residue, less than $10, and it smells like clean hair
CONS: ... I honestly cannot think of a single one.

~ Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo - cost is $8.99 for 6.73 oz
PROS: accessible, makes hair look day-after clean, little to no residue, comes in a variety of colors/scents, relatively inexpensive
CONS: does not absorb a lot of oil (definitely not a "haven't washed my hair in 4 days" solution)

~ DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo - cost is $23 for 3.5 oz
PROS: makes hair look just-washed clean, smells like heaven
CONS: leaves major white residue, it's EXPENSIVE

~ Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray - cost is $25 for 5 oz
PROS: makes hair look day-after clean, has a light, fresh lemon scent
CONS: leaves major white residue, it's EXPENSIVE

and the winner is ...

Why?

When Tati Westbrook, Youtube Influencer, first suggested this dry shampoo on her channel, I was skeptical, "Drug store dry shampoo is the greatest dry shampoo of all time? What? How could it be? Let me test this out for myself". And, obviously, it did not disappoint. It is easily accessible, inexpensive, clear (so no white residue or weird texture), and smells/looks like I just washed my hair.  I mean, can you really ask for anything more?!  It is worth every penny and then some.

  1. Wow, I sure did not expect it to be Pantene! I love my Living Proof Dry shampoo. Especially on long international travels. I buy it from Sephora.

Also I have noticed that if you use a dry towel on the whitish leftovers on your hair, it get rids of it really well.

    1. My best friend swears by Living Proof dry shampoo but it does leave a hint of white - I'm blonde so that doesn't really bother me but I know for a brunette, thats a huge concern. Also considering Living Proof is 4 times the price of Pantene's "Original Fresh" and more easily accessible, because its found at drug stores, I felt like more people would benefit from it. I'm not a fan of any of Pantene's other dry shampoos but the GOLD BOTTLE is DA BOMB!

  2. I'll have to pick some up! Do you have any suggestions for regular shampoo for oily hair? My hair looks greasy before I even leave work for the day. I have such a hard time finding the right shampoo because most everything on the self is for dry hair.

    1. So GOOD NEWS, I do have a solution... BAD NEWS, it is not a one and done sort of solution. It will take a bit of time and effort. Ready? you actually want something really gentle - no harsh chemicals, probably organic, and nothing labeled "clarifying" - that does not strip your hair of its natural oils. Your scalp will naturally start to regulate its oil production the more oil you leave in it. SO GET COMFY WITH DIRTY HAIR GIRLFRIEND!! Over a few months, you'll notice it looks cleaner for much longer. Mine used to be greasy in a couple hours after washing it but since using dry shampoo and going a few days without washing it, I can actually go almost a day and a half now without any sign of grease in my hair / dry shampoo.
